Jean's love of dancing the Foxtrot

Created by Jeremy 3 years ago

Jean and Bob -- and their friends from the wartime art college gang -- loved to dance the Foxtrot, and introduced us to some 78 rpm records of gentle tenors fronting big bands from the 1930s and 1940s. At family parties in Kenilworth (despite the deep-pile carpet and tight space) and elsewhere, they would often dance the Foxtrot -- joyfully.

So, in honor of them (and of Connie's parents, Lyle and Emily Johnson, who kept dancing Foxtrots into their eighties), we recently spent a couple of hours trying to remember our Foxtrot patterns from more than a year ago. The style may be more modern, but the music is one of their favorites, "String of Pearls," played by the Glenn Miller band, 1942.

Jerry Gray, the composer, wrote the song for the closely connected "string" of family members living on "Pearl St." in Somerville, MA. It seemed a good fit.

Thanks to Robin and Jenny, who travelled out from DC to help us make a video recording.
